The Space Within Us explores our ambivalent relationship with space. On the one hand, wonder: the silent beauty of the stars, the call of the unknown, the dream of exploration. On the other, a growing shadow: tangled satellites, orbital debris, new ambitions and rivalries, and the unsettling prospect of humanity venturing into an uncertain future. Space thus reveals its dual nature: a cosmic vastness and a mirror of our inner selves. This musical journey invites us to contemplate not only the heavens, but also the place we choose to occupy within them.
Towards the end of the work, soloists emerge like satellites, isolated voices drifting through the vastness, crossing paths, sometimes finding harmony, sometimes colliding.
This work was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association as the set test piece for the Development Section of the 2027 European Brass Band Championships (EBBC) in Montreux.
